Ponderings of The Smirt Kid: Is cinema a form of escapism?

In French class we discussed cinema –  what it means to people, what is so popular about it and why people enjoy it.

Well by the end of the discussion we came to the conclusion that cinema brings people together, it is a social opportunity, it can be a time to relax and unwind. But cinema takes you to another place, although you are sat in your cinema seat with the sticky floor beneath you, you are transported to another world. This brings me on to the topic of this blog. For the duration of the film, we, as the audience, are focused on; the plot, the characters and what’s happening within the movie. The viewer can forget about what is going on in their own life for this brief period, so is this escapism?

When faced with a stressful situation earlier on in the day, it was suggested that we leave the house and physically remove ourselves from the problems. What was the suggestion? It was my brother who suggested that we go to the cinema and watch The Dictator. However, we did not go and see it, instead the idea got me thinking that yes, cinema is a temporary method to escape from your own life, but on the other hand we find ourselves watching movies that are close to reality and yet still enjoy them.

I’d like to hear what others think about this, leave a comment if you have things to add or say, I’m sure this could lead to an interesting discussion.
